THE WINDOW INTO THE INSIDELESSNESS I
concrete, tripod, 9.4x12.6x6cm, 2024
Normally, a wall stands between two qualitatively different spaces. With a few exceptions (prison, Berlin Wall, etc.), it protects the more important inside from the outside. The history of humanity so far could perhaps be seen as such a process of innumerable attempts by various actors to expand their own inside using various strategies and methods. As a result the „frontier“ has long since disappeared and the entire Earth globe is connected by the Internet. And what we are observing today is endless struggles among countless collectives that have emerged even across geographical boundaries.
Buddhism tells me: abandoning oneself is the only way to be released from all the suffering of this world. This is probably true, and I think that there is no other solution than the disappearance of the self, or rather the inside, in order to get rid of all the wars and conflicts around us. But of course, unfortunately, this is hardly feasible.
This small gunhole optically achieves the “insidelessness” that does not exist in the reality. Its extremely thin void, or what was once its inside, divides the world into two endless open-spaces that no longer perceive any distinction between inside and outside.
